Daddy Niall- The Beginning
The quiet calmness of the waiting room was disturbed as he threw the door open, rushing in and over to you, pressing a kiss to your forehead before sitting down in the seat next to you. “I’m so sorry I’m late, got caught up in the studio cause they messed up a track so we had t go back and re-record and yeah,” he said, shaking his head, “but I wouldn’t miss this, I can’t wait t see him. Er, her? It?” You laughed at his ramblings, reaching a hand over to place on his knee. Before you had a chance to respond, a short mousy woman was standing at the doorway, calling your name.
“This is it” you whispered to him, grabbing his hand as you both followed the woman to a small, sterile looking room where she invited you to lay down on the table, Niall taking his seat at your side, right beside your growing belly. As the ultrasound technician began going over the procedure and setting up the equipment, Nialls’ hand never left yours, while his other hand made its way to your belly, as it always tended to, resting gently on your skin.
Once the cold jelly was applied to your stomach, and the technician began searching for a good view of your little one, both your and Niall’s eyes never left the screen, too enraptured at the thought of finally being able to see the baby that you’d known was inside you for the last few months.
“There,” the woman said, holding the ultrasound still on your tummy, and pointing to the screen. “There’s your baby”.
You didn’t have any words to say, as you laid there looking for the first time at your little one, the emotions you were feeling making it impossible to string any words together. You finally tore your tear-filled eyes from the screen to look over at Niall, but you were surprised when instead of seeing him over-joyed at the sight, he wore a look of pure confusion. “Ni.. what?” You asked, turning back to the screen to try and make sense of what was wrong. With one look at the screen you realized what the problem was, turning back to him laughing and squeezing his hand. He looked down at you, with the same confusion written across his face.
“Babe, I thought we were going to see it- I mean our baby, but I-” he let out a loud sigh, locking his eyes back on the screen, squinting and tilting his head to the side a little. “How is that supposed t be our baby?” You tried to stifle your laughter as you pointed to the screen.
“This, here, is it’s little head. And there’s it’s feet,” you explained, pointing out the more obvious parts of the image on the monitor. “I mean, it’s not quite like the photo-shoots you’re used to, but that’s about as good as it gets right now” you said, looking back to him with a smirk on your face. He looked at you, finally a look of understanding on his face as his cheeks were burning red with embarrassment.
Moments later the doctor entered the room, asking you if you had any questions, and while you had a few minor things to speak to her about Niall didn’t say a word, in fact, he didn’t hear much of anything as all he was focused on was the image of your baby on the screen.
“Do you want to hear the heartbeat?” the doctor asked, placing her stethoscope on your tummy, and Niall’s attention immediately turned to her, his whole face lit up at the idea.
“We can actually hear it’s heart beat, in there?” he asked surprised, pointing to your tummy.
The doctor smiled at his amazement, “yes, pretty clearly too, listen.” She turned the sound on the monitor up and there it was, clear as day, your baby’s heartbeat.
“Oh my god.” Niall breathed out quietly, tears filling his eyes. “I knew you were in there,” he started, staring down at your bare tummy, “but wow, you’re actually in there and you have a tiny little heart and wow..” You looked on at him with adoration as you let him take it all in. A few tears fell down his cheeks and he laughed, wiping them away with his sleeve, the look of complete and utter awe never leaving his face. The doctor handed you the ultrasound pictures, excused herself and asked you to book another appointment in a month, leaving you to get dressed. Niall quickly stood and took your face in his hands before you were even able to sit up, planting several kisses onto your lips, smiling with each one. You giggled at his affection, pushing him off you to replace your shirt and when you finally made it to your feet you wrapped your arms tight around his middle, burying your face in his chest.
“I’m so excited,” you said quietly into the fabric of his shirt, agreeing with you he pulled you even closer.
Once you got home that night the boys were over with their girlfriends and fiances and Niall wasted no time in passing around the ultrasound picture, being sure to point out where the baby’s head and feet were, now that he considered himself a pro. Once everyone had made their way home, you and Ni snuggled down on the couch for your normal night of catching up on news and whichever football game was on. Niall scooted down the couch and carefully pressed his ear to your tummy. “Ni, what are you doing?” You asked, although you had a pretty good idea.
“Shh, I wanna hear it’s heart beat again,” he replied, bringing his finger to his lips.
“Babe I don’t think it works like-”
So you let him try and hear the heart beat, and he continued to press his ear to you turmmy to try and hear it every night from then on.
